November 25, 2009 09:19 by Keith

We are very pleased to announce a number of training sessions across the south-west on using the South West Water Espresso Computer Modelling resource. This training session, delivered by Espresso, will allow delegates to explore the range of resources available as well as gain ideas of how to implement them into planning and use them creatively across the curriculum. The course will run for half a day, including plenty of time for ‘hands on’ exploration of the module. The morning session runs from 9am to 12pm and is repeated in the afternoon from 1pm to 4pm.

This session is open to any classroom teacher or subject leader currently working within a primary school. It will particularly interest those with responsibility for Maths, ICT or Geography.

Birdbox webcams - lots to see now

May 8, 2009 04:09 by Keith

I'm fascinated by the birdbox webcams from the Birdbox Project. Wonderful to look in the birdbox at Weston Park School and see the Blue Tits sitting on their nest. I keep checking, waiting for the parents to move from the nest, so I can see how many eggs they have...she has just moved. They have hatched! Seven..eight little hungry chicks!

Digital Literacy

May 8, 2009 03:54 by Admin
Becta and North West Learning Grid have produced a very useful resource supporting Digital Literacy It asks the user a series of questions on issues such as: how they get information on the Web; how they shop;..download stuff. After the questions have been answered, it offers some useful observations. Well worth a look.

Great Little Webcam for Animation

March 31, 2009 02:39 by Keith

I came across a fabulous little Hue HD webcam in the animation workshop with Oscar Stringer yesterday. They are very small, and very cheap (at less than £20) When teamed up with I Can Animate and Windows Movie Maker we were getting some fabulous animations. A great little device that almost has the picture definition of a visualiser (on a flexible mount, it almost suggests itself as a mini-visualiser). Lets just say it compares very well to its more portly blue rival. Highly recommended.

March 27, 2009 05:52 by ian

Richard Boyd forwarded me a report about the use of Twitter and on-line communication tools which appeared in the Daily Telegraph. It also includes a video explaining what Twitter is - very useful!

Using ICT Themes from KentEd to embed ICT in the curriculum

March 24, 2009 15:53 by Keith

Confused about how to arrange your ICT scheme of work in school? Have a look at the KentEd ICT Themes. When you see the five themes as an overview, you can see that it makes wonderful sense. Use this, as KentEd say, to maximise opportunities to embed ICT in the curriculum and to make use of new technologies.

Beyond Engagement - report on the use of ICT in KS2

March 12, 2009 16:49 by Keith

I'm finding the Beyond Engagement report to be very readable. It is very clear on the difference between engaging learners with ICT and using it for enhancement of the learning. There are lots of interesting examples. They found more use of creative technologies and noted a lack of data logging, etc. Some interesting thoughts on schemes of work too. An interesting conclusion was that "To further the development of the ICT, primary schools will benefit from focusing on issues of teaching and learning and not simply on the technology of the ICT application itself." Interesting thought from Tim Rylands in the same vein.

New website for sharing resources

March 12, 2009 14:12 by Admin

We found an interesting resource where teachers who make their own resources can share and earn “credits” towards other shared resources. Users can browse and search for relevant resources by subject, topic, age group and ability level.

All the relevant resources are then displayed, ranked by “teachability”. Further information can be found at www.teachable.net/intro

Present your ideas with Voicethread

March 12, 2009 13:49 by Keith

Voicethread is a Web 2.0 hosted service that takes slide-type presentations to a whole new level.  It makes it so easy to create presentations with either audio or video support tracks. It is even possible to record live annotations while recording a presentation. So you could use it to annotate over a science video to explain your view of what is happening, layering your narration over the top..the forces involved in a PE recorded clip? The end result is a streaming presentation that makes explaining your thoughts so much easier, alongside others' explanation too, it could really enhance the learning experience. One educator spoke of Voicethread "creating a warmer teaching-learning experience". Thinking about it, it is so versatile, it must be useful as a learning tool in many contexts. I know some teachers who are experimenting and may present at our ICT Conference. I'm really interested in listening to that.
